Sea Captain’s House She-Crab Soup: Get the Recipe!

There are plenty of recipes at Sea Captain’s House that regular visitors keep coming back for. The hushpuppies are infamous, and the crab cakes are pretty much universally revered. But there’s one dish at this Myrtle Beach institution that garners more adoration than any other: Sea Captain’s House She Crab Soup. And we’ve got the recipe. Even better? We’re sharing it.

So go and get the best crab meat you can find and get ready to make some of the most luscious soup you’ve ever tasted. Of course, you probably can’t replicate the amazing view and service that Sea Captain’s House restaurant is so well known for, but there’s only so much we could do.

She Crab Soup –Sea Captain’s House

2 large onions, diced
1 cup clarified butter
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 and 1/3 quarts half and half
1 quart heavy cream
1 and 1/2 teaspoons ground mace
1 cup good sherry
1 pound fresh white crabmeat (must be good quality)
salt and pepper to taste

In large stockpot, cook onions in butter until soft. Add flour, reduce heat to low, stirring constantly for 15 minutes. Add milk products and continue stirring. Add remaining ingredients and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring frequently. Makes 1 gallon.

    Wonderful she crab soup. In Baltimore, we have cream of crab soup. Hard to tell the difference!
    The rest of the meal was awesome!, sorry no room for desert!
    We will be back next year!

    We come to MB twice a year for a week each time. We have lunch at Sea Captain’s House five times each week! We have dinner there at least once each week while there! –have been doing this for more than 10 years if my memory serves me well. Enough said?—indeed , my favorite restaurant anywhere! By the way, “we” is a group of older ladies from Walhalla—some of us are now in our late eighties.

    I don’t even bother to order she crab soup anywhere else because Sea Captain’s is the best anywhere. I would love to try to make it, but everywhere I see your recipe, it shows ingredients for a gallon. How about a quart sized version?

    So , we have been traveling back and forth from Pa to MB for over 15 years..the Sea Captains was then and remains the premier restaurant at the’s the icon others try to emulate but fail to obtain..sure , best she crab soup anywhere , great entrees and sandwiches , the best oysters available.we dine there often.
