18 Dec Christmas with the Captain
‘Tis the season for spreading holiday cheer. Here at the Sea Captain’s House in Myrtle Beach, Christmas is one of our favorite holidays. We don’t skimp when it comes to decorations and we have plenty of holiday traditions.
The Monday after Thanksgiving, we begin decorating the restaurant. We pull out all of our Christmas decorations and begin placing them on the mantles, on shelves and on the tables in the main waiting area. Some of the decorations have been around since we’ve opened our doors! We put greenery with ribbon on the mantles and place Santa statues and wooden sleighs in between.
Homemade Christmas Cookie Ornaments
One of our traditions is baking homemade Christmas cookie ornaments. We bake around 4 dozen and cut them into various shapes including gingerbread men, stockings, snowmen and stars. Once they’re baked and cooled, we decorate them with colored icing and write out the names of each of the staff members on them. Then they’re ready to be hung on the tree and scattered throughout the restaurant.
Every year we bring in two live trees – one in the main room and one for the Blue Room. The one in the main room this year is humongous! It takes up the entire far entrance leading into the bar area and is so wide, it took us longer than normal to wrap all the twinkling lights around it. This Christmas tree is our colorful one – from the twinkling colored lights to the shiny ornaments and homemade cookie ornaments. There’s even a giant red bow that we garnish the top of the tree with that flows down the sides. The Christmas tree in the Blue Room has a nautical theme. On this tree we hang captain ornaments, starfish, jellyfish, and other items inspired by the sea.
Another tradition we have is the Wassail we keep simmering in the main waiting room. Wassail is a hot, mulled cider that dates back to the Medieval Times where it was associated with wassailing, a drinking ritual intended to guarantee a productive cider apple harvest. This seasonal drink is not only delicious, but helps warm you up during the cold winter days. Feel free to have a cup or two while you wait!
